This YFC event features an interview with David Ireland, who is pursuing a Master of Information Studies at McGill University. David specializes in philosophy and linguistics, having done his first Master at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. His areas of expertise cover the history and development of language and sounds, bibliographic and archival descriptions and practices, teaching, and research methodology. In this inspiring conversation with YFC member Renee Manderville, David talks about his process of arriving at his area of study, transitioning scholarly work in museums and heritage fields, exploring PhDs, and much more. The second YFC event of 2022 is a conversation and interactive tutorial with CFFM young friend Isabel Smith and Giuliana Garofalo. Giuliana is the Outreach Assistant for the DRAW PROJECT, (Data Rescue: Archival and Weather), an interdisciplinary project that aims to make meteorological observations of the McGill Observatory digitally available for scientific analysis by means of a citizen-science web platform. The goal of the project is to preserve the historical context and archival integrity of the collection. Isabel and Giuliana will have a conversation about the DRAW Project's history, goals, and interdisciplinary impact, and then Giuliana will walk Isabel through how the transcription platform works.
Young Friends members Huirui Zhang and Isabel Smith hosted the discussion with Molly Heintzman (she/her) and Gia Lynde (she/they). Molly and Gia are both recent graduates working in the non-profit field. Both Molly and Gia worked in Nemaska, a Cree nation in Eeyou Istchee territory (Northern Québec). Molly works as a Leadership and Healthy Living Coordinator with Youth Fusion and Gia worked as an educator for Elephant Thoughts.
Erin Messier works at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in a community engagement role. Erin graduated from Trent University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies and History and later attended Fleming College for Museum Management and Curatorship. Andrea Valentine-Lewis (she/her) is an independent curator, researcher, and writer. She is the gallery coordinator at the Burrard Arts Foundation. She is also the treasurer of the UNIT/PITT Society for Art and Critical Awareness. Watch to learn more about the curatorial process and her pathway in the gallery world.
Marlene Misiuk is an art historian and researcher based in Montreal. She completed her master’s degree in Art History at Concordia University in 2018. She has worked for and collaborated with galleries and museums in Canada and abroad. She now works as a Program Specialist for Mitacs, a national, not-for-profit organization that designs and delivers post-secondary research and training programs in Canada. Marlene is in conversation with Huirui Zhang, a CFFM Young Friend and fellow Art History student.
Li Xiao is an emerging museum professional currently working for the Africville Museum in Halifax.
